Ray became a student of Ustad Zakir Hussain in 1973 at the Ali Akbar College of Music and went on to study privately with him for many years. He joined the Tal Vadya Rhythm Band, a class band at the college led by Zakirji, which became the Diga Rhythm Band (with Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead) of later fame.  He also was a principal player in Zakirji’s follow up release, “Zakir Hussain and the Rhythm Experience” and has joined Zakirji in many concerts.
